The SMF Winter and Christmas Beer Tasting Party! (2012)

Friday night before my friends Jason, Jeff, Steve, Claire, Katherine, and I went to see a 35mm screening of "Black Christmas" at The Colonial Theatre we held a beer tasting party featuring 14 different winter or Christmas beers! Over the summer I did a Pumpkin Beer Tasting Night with Jay and Steve (aka Icon vs. Icon ) that you can read about right (HERE)

All of us brought something different to that table and we also drank some Natty Boh after every couple beers to cleanse our palettes  Each beer below is rated on a "Candy Cane Scale" with five Candy Canes being the highest a beer can rate. I found it very interesting how our views vastly differed on some beers including a few where the group was split between loving it and hating it. OK let's start things off . . .

01. Chatoe Rogue First Growth Pumpkin Patch

Claire (4.2), Jason (3), Jeff (3.5), Katherine (5), Steve (3.2), and Tom (4)

Candy Cane Rating (Average Score): 3.2 out of 5 Candy Canes

We kicked things off with a pumpkin beer left over that I've been keeping since the fall. Steve referred to this as the poor man's "Southern Tier Pumpking". Clair hated it but loved the bottle enough that she ended up taking it home. As for the rest of us we all enjoyed it., not the best pumpkin beer I've had this year but still pretty damn good!

02. Saranac Big Moose Ale

Claire (0.5), Jason (2), Jeff (1), Katherine (1), Steve (1), and Tom (2)

Candy Cane Rating: 1.25 out of 5 Candy Canes

Two beers in and I cracked up when Jay said "Worst Beer So far!" But he was really not that far off. This also got compared to tasting like Bong Water and Club Soda Mixed with Stale Beer!

03. Lakefront Holiday Spice

Claire (0.5), Jason (2.5), Jeff (3), Katherine (3), Steve (1), and Tom (2.5)

Candy Cane Rating: 2 out of 5 Candy Canes

Claire said this was worse then the last. someone said it tasted like Rest Room Soap (that pink stuff) and Jeff said it smelled like Easter Sunday. Take what you want from that but I thought it was an average beer. Their pumpkin offering was much better though!

04. Dark Horse Perkulator Coffee Dopplebock

Claire (4.7), Jason (4), Jeff (3.5), Katherine (4), Steve (4), and Tom (4)

Candy Cane Rating: 4 out of 5 Candy Canes

Finally one that we all liked! It tasted like walking into a Coffee Shop. Oddly enough I've never been a huge coffee drinker, but I dug this beer a lot and will grab more if I can find them.

05. Weyerbacher Winter Ale

Claire (1), Jason (2), Jeff (1), Katherine (1), Steve (1.2), and Tom (1)

Candy Cane Rating: 1.2 out of 5 Candy Canes

"Cat piss" and "a litter box that hasn't been change in forever!" Yes those were the words used to describe this Winter Ale! The less said the better, but I'd really like to know what Weyerbacher was thinking when they put this beer out!

06. Tröegs Mad Elf Ale

Claire (1), Jason (3), Jeff (4.5), Katherine (1), Steve (4), and Tom (4)

Candy Cane Rating: 2.9 out of 5 Candy Canes

Maybe this is a guy thing but the ladies absolutely hated this beer while the gents loved it. Kat said at least it didn't taste like cat piss, so it had that going for it and I'm sure it will end up being their holiday slogan next year!

07. Seven Seas Winter Storms

Claire (.3), Jason (3), Jeff (3.5), Katherine (1), Steve (3), and Tom (3)

Candy Cane Rating: 2.3 out of 5 Candy Canes

This beer was responsible for one of the quotes of the night when Kat said she, "Would play just the tip with it!" Hmmmmm moving right along!

08. Bell's Winter White Ale

Claire (4.9), Jason (3), Jeff (4.5), Katherine (4), Steve (4.5), and Tom (4)

Candy Cane Rating: 4.1 out of 5 Candy Canes

This may have been the surprise of the night! Claire said she wanted to have it's babies. It was that good!

* As you can also see as the night went on our responses to each beer started to get sillier and sillier!

09. Lagunitas Brown Shugga

Claire (.5), Jason (.5), Jeff (.5), Katherine (3.5), Steve (4), and Tom (2)

Candy Cane Rating: 1.8 out of 5 Candy Canes

You either like a little Brown Shugga or you don't. I thought it was so-so but a nice change of pace.

* After the ninth beer we ate some Pizza that we had delivered to our hotel room and held our "Dirty Santa" gift exchange!

I ended up with Scott C.'s "The Great Showdowns" and "King Kong Escapes" on DVD . . . Thanks Kat!

10. Breckenridge Christmas Ale

Claire (4), Jason (4), Jeff (4), Katherine (4), Steve (4.5), and Tom (4)

Candy Cane Rating: 4.08 out of 5 Candy Canes

Another beer we all enjoyed. We considered it to be almost like dessert after eating our pizza since it had coco taste to it!

11. Santa's Private Reserve Ale

Claire (N/A), Jason (N/A), Jeff (4), Katherine (N/A), Steve (4), and Tom (3.5)

Candy Cane Rating: 3.8 out of 5 Candy Canes

I have been saving this beer since I got a case last year and thought tonight was the night to finally open the last one!

I remember enjoying it a hell of a lot more last time I had one. The girls opted out from having one, but Steve who I gave one of these beers to last year liked it. He also said there is nothing Christmas like about it save for the label.

12. Southern Tier 2XMAS

Claire (1), Jason (4), Jeff (5), Katherine (3), Steve (5), and Tom (3)

Candy Cane Rating: 3 out of 5 Candy Canes

"It smells like one of those craft stores at the mall", and while Jeff might be right for saying that we all agreed it was a strong beer to get us back into the mood before we got to our lasts two beer!

13. Souther Tier Krampus

* Candy Cane Rating: N/A

* I actually don't remember drinking this or taking any notes on it besides having Steve marked down as a "4" so for all I know he might have downed the bottle himself. Sorry about my lack of score, but that is how far deep into the tasting I was!

14. Shiner Holiday Cheer
Claire (5), Jason (4), Jeff (4), Katherine (5), Steve (5), and Tom (4.5)

Candy Cane Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Candy Canes

Talk about saving the best for last, though our rating for this may not have ended up the highest on the list but we all agreed that peach like taste of "The Shiner" was a great way to end the tasting party!

This whole event took place in a small hotel room in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania over the course of say 3 or 4 hours . . . by the end of the night the room was trashed and looked like something out of a Mötley Crüe After Party circa 1987 . . . save for the Drugs and Groupies!

It was a lot of fun and thankfully nobody got hurt save for someone's ass getting whipped with one of those extra long Twizzlers that was laying around!

  1. I hope you, Jason and everyone else in the party had a great time! It seems like we have a little similarities on our winter list, bro! :) Hmm...I haven't tasted the Southern Tier Krampus before but judging by the label, it looks strong.
