For those not familiar with "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia", it's a show about 5 sociopathic scumbags who live in Philly and own a bar named Paddy's Pub . . .
Sunny is one of those shows that you never quite know what you going to get, there are episodes in it's now 8 year run that I'd say are some of the funniest half-hours I witnessed in television sitcom history ("Sweet Dee's Dating a Retarded Person", "The Gang Gets Invincible" and of course the two parter "Mac and Charlie Die), but in it's later years the show has ran out of steam and at times dreadful to watch for those few bright spots each new season provides! In 2009 when news got out that there was going to be a Christmas Special titled "A Very Sunny Christmas" I was game, for one it was going to be direct to video (not aired on FX first) and also it would be unedited . . .
The end result turned out to be maybe the gang's finest hour (ok 44 minutes but you get the point)
This special open with "The Reynolds Twins" Dennis and Deandra stopping by the bar and finding their friends Charlie and Mac turing Paddy's into a Winter Wonderland for Christmas with all kind of tacky decorations and they even have an out of whack snow maker machine . . .
Frank (played by the one and only Danny DeVito) has made every Christmas a living hell for his kids, always finding out what gifts they really wanted the most that year and buying it for himself or breaking it right in front of them. This year's no different as Frank drives up to to the bar in Dennis' dream car a Lamborghini Countachand only to say "Merry Christmas Bitches!"
With the Reynolds clan being a bunch of grinches, Mac and Charlie end up going on their own little adventure and remember some christmas traditions of their own including tossing rocks at train cars and shaving dogs around the neighborhood? Back at Mac's childhood room they find an Omnibot toy and video tape marked "Christmas 1985", after watching it Mac finds out the horrible truth that his parents use to steal all the gifts from under other people's trees each year. One such person was Ricky Falcone (who's actor has the worst "Philly Accent" I must add!) form whom Mac's family stole the Omnibot toy and Mac tries to make amends with. After that goes sour they head to Charlie's house and he recalls all the Santa's who use to visit his Mom and him when he was a kid each Christmas morning, turns out they were not Santas but "Johns" cause Charlie's Mom was actually a prostitute!
Meanwhile Dee and Dennis hatch a plot to get back at Frank by contacting an old co-worker of his named Eugene (played by David Huddles aka "The Big Lebowski")
Frank believes Eugene died years ago so the twins try to make him to appear as a ghost that's haunting Frank just like in "A Christmas Carol". This aspect of the plot is kinda lames but later provides the special with one of it's funniest moments . . .
At a company christmas party they crash, Frank is hiding in a leather couch to try to trick people into talking about him, he gets to hot in there and comes out naked much like the only funny scene in "Ace Ventura 2" when Ace comes out of the rhino's ass!
We catch up with Mac and Charlie at a Mall looking to buy the hottest toy that year to make things up with Ricky, they find out the toy that everyone is try to get their kids is also a robot but the store is sold out of them. After a funny exchange of random past Philly sports figures and whether or not the toy would be sold out if tried to buy it . . . Vo Hayes anyone?
Next Charlie spots the mall's "Santa Claus" from afar . . .
All Hell breaks lose after biting Santa in the neck and causing blood to shoot out everywhere and Kid's are crying all around . . . EPIC!
One last highlight of the special is a wicked spoof of 2 claymation christmas specials of yesteryear . . .
"Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "California Raisins"!
