My Ode To The Creature From The Black Lagoon

Over the years there has been one green creature that I have always loved and held dear to my horror nerd heart . . . His name is Gill-man!

He may not have destroyed Japanese cities like Godzilla or taught us about environmental issues like Swamp Thing, but the Creature did introduce us to Clint Eastwood so, I think that trumps anything those other two green guys did in motion picture history.
I first became aware of the "Creature from the Black Lagoon" when I was a youngster, spending my summer vacation down in Wildwood, New Jersey. In Wildwood, in the late 80s, there was a Monster Museum that had a a bunch of wax figures of the Universal Monsters and other popular horror icons of the time displayed in cheesy setups; King Kong and Godzilla sitting on top of buildings playing cards, Dracula on a beach holding a tube of sunscreen, and then there was the Gill-Man, with a fish hook in his mouth and two oblivious fishermen in a boat in front of him not aware of what they caught. Needless to say I was hooked (sorry for the lame pun).

From that moment the Creature became one of my favorite monsters around. The only problem was there wasn't much in the way of merchandise featuring Gilly like there was for the other Universal Monsters (Dracula, The Mummy, Frankenstein, Wolfman, etc.). Hell, all those guys even had their own GhostBusters Toy!

Since my family didn't own a VCR until the mid 90s, I had to rely on my old friend's Mom to either rent the movies for me or hope that Cinemax/HBO was running The Monster Squad that month to get my Creature fix! When we did get a VCR I was able to pick the first two movies from Suncoast Video with no problem, but was never able to track down "The Creature Walks Among Us" until I got the "Legacy Collection" on DVD, it was then that I finally owned all 3 of them.
Like I said earlier, trying to find Creature related toys in the 90s was no picnic either. Sure, there are all kinds of toys out there now, but back then the best luck I had was buying a Kid's Meal at Burger King to get this . . .
Since I've been thinking about the Creature a lot recently I figured I should do a post dedicated to him, his "Monster Squad" counterpart and some other stuff I feel that is related to the Creature in one way or another. Here are some Behind the Scenes photos from the movie's set, custom posters/art work, toys, and music all inspired by the Gill-Man! Hope You Enjoy :)

  1. This was an awesome post! That is my favorite movie monster of all time. I found him to be tragic, romantic, and missing a nose! I just love that creature. I probably see that original movie 3-4 times a year.

  2. The Creature army soldier is my favorite (all monsters should be drafted into military service), plus that INSANE Cramps video. Great Post

  3. Thanks Autumn for the support.

Chris I love the soldier picture, so silly looking.

  4. Cool post. Creature porn...who'd have thought?

Seems despite his limitations as a character the Creature is a lot of people's favorite so far as the Universal stable go. I always dug him because of the Lovecraft connection (not to mention the suit). Nice to see I'm not alone. Shilling Mountain Dew shame...

  5. The Creature in the bath with the rubber ducky is my image, Terry and I are friends, and if he posted the image, it was most likely from my site. Here is the original link:

    1. Thanks, sorry about the mix up, I will fix that right now!
