AV In/AV Out . . . Confessions of an Early Video Pirate

Back in the day who else here used to rent a bunch of movies from the video store, hook up two VCRs and try to dub as many movies as you could on one VHS tape?

My Shitty Drawing of how to hookup two VCRs in the back of this book

As you can imagine the quality was piss-poor on these homemade video compilations, but it beat the alternative at the time which was paying the high prices of buying the movies. Before DVDs came out most of the prices to own ranged from about $80 to $100. I remember in the Mid 90s asking the owner at a Suncoast Video how much a copy of Killer Klowns From Outer Space would run. He got back to me and said $85. A few years later it was less then $10 on DVD . . .

Anyway, I had probably about a 100 of these six to eight hour tapes packed with 70s and 80s classics. Most of them are long gone now since I built a pretty good collection of DVDs and Blu-rays over the years. But I never forget the lost art of dubbing movies together and trading them off with friends.

Here are some of the ones I remember making like it was yesterday:

Jamie Lee Curtis "Queen of the Scream"

Terror Train, Prom Night, The Fog, Halloween 1, and 2

"H is For Horror" He Knows You're Alone, House, Happy Birthday To Me, and Hell Night.

GhostBusters 1 and 2 paired up with Gremlins 1 and 2

Goonies, BeetleJuice, Little Shop of Horrors, and The Burbs

Return of the Living Dead, RepoMan, Dawn of Dead, and The Lost Boys (I worn this tape down to the bone)
Just One of the Guys, Teen Witch, Once Bitten, and Vice Versa

Puppetmaster 1-5, with Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge being the first movie on the tape to keep things in some kind of order.

"Summer Camp Funtime" The Burning along with Sleepaway Camp 1, 2, and 3

And of course this Gem which I never parted with . . .

Ghoulies 1-4

It's funny how now we all care so much about high-definition video and sound, but for the most part our introduction to film was anything but. Hell, I didn't even know what widescreen meant until DVD came out and you had to choose between having your movie in either Widescreen or Fullscreen . . .

SignaMania VII Wrestling Convention Recap (9/24/2011)

If there's one thing I enjoy more then Horror Movies, it's Old School Wrestling. I'm a casual watcher of today's product, but the years between 1988 and 1994 are responsible for some of my fondest childhood memories.
I never got into the Wrestling Era that featured guys like The Iron Sheik, Hillbilly Jim, Nikolai Volkoff, Junkyard Dog, and Mr. Wonderful . . .
My favorites were the guys who bridged the gap from that Era (like Hogan, Andre The Giant, Savage, Jake the Snake, and Steamboat) and the new stars that were arriving on the scene or stolen by the WWF form AWA/Indy Promotions. (The Ultimate Warrior, Mr. Perfect, The Rockers, Rick Rude and The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase)

A few days ago at the PA/NJ Horror Club I meet a guy named Duke who also digs Wrestling, though we disagreed on a few things (for instance I'm Pro Mark Henry, where he can't stand the guy) I could tell Duke was a longtime fan and enjoyed debating with him back and forth.  He asked if I was attending the upcoming Wrestling Related Convention "Signamania" that Saturday? I had no clue that even were such a thing as a Wrestling Convention! But then sadly the first thing that popped into my head was that scene in the "The Wrestler" where Randy the Ram and some other old retired wrestler were signing autographs for about maybe 10 people and everyone looking ashamed to be there . . .
When I got home that night  I checked out the Website to see who all was signing and to my surprise there were some really Big Names involved . . .
Bret "The Hitman" Hart, Kevin "Diesel" Nash,  Scott Steiner, Bobby "The Brain" Heenan, Lex Luger, Chyna,  and Jimmy "The Mouth of the South" Hart!  Plus the fact that this was  "Signamania 7" made the whole thing sound very legit.
Saturday morning I was still on the fence about going, but since it was about 10 Minutes outside of Philly I figured why not. I got to the High School where the event was taking place around an hour into the show and was happy to see the parking lot somewhat packed. I opted to get the general admission ticket for $15 since the other ticket "The VIP Deal" was $200. Most of the people that were included in the VIP package I didn't care to meet or didn't really know what to say to them if I did . . .   I'm sure "The Killer Bees" B. Brian Blair & Jim Brunzel, Tony Atlas, Deuce & Domino, and Viscera aka Mabel are lovely people, but come on man . . . $200.
As soon as i got there I got a phone call from a friend and had to go back to the parking lot just to hear her . . . the reason being was because there was a guy using the the School's PA System to  Hard Sell the Event (Just like a real Wrestling Show, oh and this went on the whole day BTW)
While I was outside on the phone I seen "Big Daddy Cool" Kevin Nash getting out of a van . . . Damn was he TALL. Also I saw Duke from a few nights ago and Chris Behringer of CZW.

I walked in with Chris and his Brother and talked to them for a bit. I walked around and saw the place had a pretty nice size crowd, there were a few lines forming to meet the wrestlers. The biggest being Kevin Nash since Bret Hart wasn't there yet. As many of you know I'm not a waiting in line guy, I get really antsy. I looked around a saw Scott Steiner sitting near Kevin Nash. He didn't appear to have a line waiting to meet him so i walked up to and asked "Hey is there a line for your table" . . . Real Smooth Tom, I didn't mean it to sound like that and the last thing I wanted to do was Pissoff a person who's Arms are bigger then my Whole Body . . .
Scott looked up and said "The line stars with you I guess . . ." Well … that wasn't awkward at all.

                                                                    "Holla If Ya Hear Me!"
The pic came out blurry, but I was afraid to ask for a retake!

After counting my lucky stars I survived meeting Big Poppa Pump and lived to tell the tale, I ran back into Duke. We talked some about the turnout, he gave me the bad news that Bobby the Brain wouldn't be there (He's been in poor health for many years sadly), and he asked if I mind taking the picture of him and Nash. So we waited the longest line of the show, but I got to say it moved very quickly.
When I got to the front I decided to also get a pic with him.
Kevin Nash and I doing the "nWo Too Sweet" hand gesture . . .
                                                                  Well I kinda botched it.

After meeting the former Champs, Duke and I walked around to some of the Vending Tables, here's some random pictures I took . . .

What kinda of people come to a Wrestling Con? Dudes Lots of Dudes.
Hey look it Chyna!
King Kong Bundy doing his Five Count!
DX Reunion with Billy Gunn and Chyna
(The Roadogg, X-Pac, HHH, and HBK must not have gotten the memo)
Nice to see Hulk Hogan make it out though . . .

So did you ever want to relive the XFL? Well now you can with this 29 Disk Collection . . .
Don't worry I didn't buy it lol

This table in particular blew my mind . . .
Look at all those Old School WWF VHS Tapes!

                                                        I picked up Rampage 92 for $10

(Featuring these Matches: Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels, Randy Savage vs. Repo Man, Ultimate Warrior & Undertaker vs. Papa Shango & Berzeker, Undertaker vs. Razor Ramone, Tataka vs. Rick Martel, and a Exclusive 40 Man Battle Royale)

We headed back into the Signing Room and took note of how cool of a guy former WWE Superstar Chris Master seemed to be and how it looked liked he was really enjoying his time being there.

For those you don't know Master the WWE brought him in around 2005, Pushed him to the Moon while he was still Green(rookie still trying to learn the trade), Fired Him for Breaking Wellness, Hired him back, then Fired him again even though he got a 100% Better since his debut.
We talked to him for a bit, and we also got a few good pictures with him. I won't post the one of him putting me in his Finishing Move "The Master Lock" cause it looks like I'm being Raped by him and enjoying it way to much . . .  but hey here's a pic of us Flexing our Guns . . .
Looking a little flabby there standing next to me Masters . . .

At the same table with Chris was former WWE Diva/Playboy Centerfold Maria . . .
Maria is SMOKING in person, we talked some about her B Movie Mayhem DVD Line she's been working on. It's a bunch of 80s Films that are just now getting a DVD release and she does Elvira Type Movie Host before and after each of the movies . . .

Around Noon they started setting up for the Hitman so Duke and I heading over to the room he was sitting in. The line was long, but we would be one of the first ones meeting him once he got setup.

Since we were at a high school most of this stuff was happening in the school's hallways. This weird set up really made me laugh . . .
Hey It's Teacher Cam Gigandet of "Never Back Down" and "Twilight" Fame!

Anyway since I have Bret's book, but couldn't find it anywhere in my house this morning, I brought with me the next best thing . . . the Hitman DVD the WWE put out a few years back.
I was thinking about what to get him to sign on the cover and it hit me . . . Get him to say something from his infamous "El Dandy" Promo from his WCW Run . . .
                                                                      So here it is . . .
                                                                       To Tom
                                                            (Never Doubt El Dandy)
                                                           - Bret "The Hitman" Hart

Bret you truly are "The Best There Is . . . The Best There Was . . . The Best There Ever Will Be".
It was a honor getting to meet you, and I'm glad I got a good laugh out of you when I asked about El Dandy.
Bret and I in some wierd Hallway . . .

Right before I left I finally broke down and got a picture with a True Legend of Wrestling . . . Virgil
Virgil has been to just about every Con I went to over the last ten years. Sometimes he's by himself, sometimes with the Million Dollar Man, and sometimes he's REALLY by himself . . .

I felt bad when he keep trying to get Duke or I to get a picture with him so I finally caved . . .
The best part was he was trying to charge extra $10 to be able to hold the Million Dollar Belt in the picture . . . Don't Push It Dude!
I can't tell you how glad I am he didn't personalize this 8x10 . . . It may be worth something some day!

And on that note I end this SignaMania 7 Recap, But remember kids "Never Doubt El Dandy"

PA/NJ Horror Club Meeting (9/22/2011)

Last night I attended my first PA/NJ Horror Club meeting. Just like the PA/NJ Horror Facebook Group, the meeting was put together by Rob Dimension along with his Wife Kim.
Rob and I at Capes and Cowls Collectibles

Since I only became aware of the group about a month ago I wasn't sure what what to expect . . .
But Rob and Kim do a great job at making everyone feel at home and It's a great way to interact with fellow Horror Movie Fans while watching an Independent Feature Films. Last night's film was Sylvia and Jen Soska's "Dead Hooker in a Trunk" and it was screen for us at Capes and Cowls Collectibles.

Dead Hooker is so much more than a catchy title, both written and directed by the The Soska Sisters it pushes a lot of buttons when it comes to Violence and all around craziness that made even me turn away at certain points in the movie.  Right now the it is looking for an American Distribution, but is available for purchase on Amazon.com's U.K. Site.

Before and after the movie we had some lengthy conversations with topics ranging from "What movie made you a Horror Fan" , "Pro and Cons of Indy Horror", and "What were some movies you didn't like the first time you watched it, but after a second or third viewing you changed your opinion on."  Also Rob talked some about the Q&As he hosted last weekend at Monster Mania 20.

Here's some other cool shit that went down at the meeting  . . .
There was a table set up for VHS/DVD Trading

Rob gave out some giveaways, I won a Poltergeist Keychain, which was fitting since I wearing my New FrightRags Poltergeist Tee.

Speaking of Shirts, almost everyone there was rocking some cool horror gear. This "Krueger Realty" Shirt really stood out and was my favorite of the night.

Ken Haeser, artist of "The Living Corpse" was on hand to draw Zombified versions of everyone who came to the meeting. Here's how mine turned out . . .

Well as you could imagine all of this was a lot of Fun. Big thanks to the Dimensions for running this event, the people who came out from the Facebook Group, it's always nice to meet people whom you talk to online in real life! Also props to the staff of Capes and Cowls Collectibles, who I had a good conversation about Comics and Old School Wrestling with after the movie was finished. I can't wait to make it out to one of these again, thanks again Rob for inviting me out.

Well It's Been Nice Knowing You Netflix . . .

I think this COMIC from The Oat Meal pretty much sums up how the majority of us feel about the latest shenanigans Netflix has come up with.  I was pissed when did away with the "Friends Features" but stuck around, I thought the price hike was handled stupidly but once again I stuck around . . . But this splitting it into the separate companies is the last straw for me. I know most people only just stream from them already, but I hardy ever find movies to stream off their website I like or haven't seen already . . . and also most of the Horror Selection is Bottom of Barrel Shit that's pretty unwatchable. I still do like the DVD Mailer service because it allowed me bring the movies into work to watch on my Lunch Hour with my coworkers or bring them to a Shit Movie Fest Party if it was an Out Of Print Movie or something Chris or I somehow didn't own . . .

But after tonight I am canceling my account outright and taking a break for the foreseeable future. I may join "Qwikster" at a later date, but for now I am going to start watching all those movies I got at the Horror Cons still sitting on my shelf . . .

Here's a a list of everything I rented  in the last 3 years I been a member (The List Goes From Last to First) . . . I'm Happy to say I left on a High Note with "Weekend at Bernie's II" being my Last Rental . . .
And wow I rented Paul Schrader's "HARDCORE" on 3 separate occasions! I should buy that movie at this point lol.

Monster Mania 20 Weekend Recap (Days 2&3)

Day 2 (September 17, 2011)

I woke up around 8am Saturday Morning, after grabbing a shower and posting on Facebook some I headed down to the main floor.
Mike needed some time to talk with Tony Todd about the Candy Man Mirrors he made for him to sell, so I filled in again at Mike's table most of the morning.

After Mike came back I headed over to see my friends from the VHS Preservation Society.
I pretty much wiped out Sean the last few shows when it came to the Old School Wrestling DVDs, so these two with Hogan completes the whole set he carries. I was able to grab a movie I been looking for and wanted to add to the the SMF:Rocktober Event named "Get Crazy". Also I got something called "Mutant Hunt" I couldn't pass up based off that cover.

Besides an order of Fries from the night before, I decided maybe it would be good idea to actually get something to eat in the hotel's restaurant (especially since I planed on Drinking some later that night.) When I got there I saw Freddy and Jason chilling and drinking beer . . . stuff like this never gets old to me lol

Since I was in Maryland I figured I'd try to the CrabCakes, they did not disappoint. The fact I was eating CrabCakes and watching some College Football game on the TV this scene from Wedding Crashers pop in my head.

After eating I stop over to see my friend Gregg's DVD Table. This time around he had huge new setup, and not a table like he has had at passed shows . . .

Talking to Gregg is always a pleasure, he has a wicked sense of humor and is very knowledgeable about the movies he carries. Most of them I never heard of, but based off his recommendations I give them a shot and usually end up loving them.
The Dude never steers you wrong, instead of making a quick buck he tell what's good and what's bad based off you tastes in movies. I got  Massacre at Central High(which I been trying to find for ages), Three Tough Guys (staring Isaac Hayes and Fred Williamson!) and a Gator Bait 1&2.

Since my Man-Purse was filled with movies from Gregg and Sean I mad a pitstop back in my hotel room, I ended up resting some in the room  before i heading back down stairs.
I texted the guys from icon vs. icon to see if they would still be making the show, but something came up. It suck cause I really looked forward to seeing them . . . (Season of the Witch fellas, I'll be there)
Anfter resting I ran into John S. again, we talked about the weekend so far, he gave me his number and said we'd hang later tonight.
I checked in with Mike and he was excited he sold his "Uncle Frank" Hellraiser figure and also the Zombie vs. Shark Figure, I told him I would fill on for him shortly, but first I was going to walk over to Clare Higgins and Barbara Crampton tables with Brandt. He knows as well as I do it's hard to get good pictures at these things, cause the jackass you trust to take them always fucks it up somehow (See my John Carpenter pic for reference). After getting the pics with Brandt I was back to selling, but I also managed to get some movies off of him while we were sitting there shooting the shit  . . .
555, Linnea Quigley's Horror Workout, Death Warmed Over, Hack-O-Latern, Watchers, and Stepfather 3.

Some very soild pick ups if I must say. The Linnea Quigley one is a complete trainwreck . . .
Here's the Summary on the Back: "After a nice shower, Linnea does some warm-up stretches and then goes for a run. She encounters some flabby zombies who follow her back to the house, where she leads them in some poolside aerobic routines. Later she unwinds by inviting some girlfriends over for a slumber party and some exercise. When something goes bump in the house, her friends begin experiencing an attrition problem."

The Vending and autograph Signing Rooms were close to closing for the night, so some of the actors were walking around checking out the tables. One such actor was Ernie Hudson . . .
I always been a big GhostBusters fan, and even more so a fan of "Leo Glynn" Ernie's role on HBO Series Oz . . . I asked if he minded grabbing photo with me and he was more then happy to do so . . . Cool Beans!
Who you Gonna Call?

The show was ending for the night, but the true fun and highlight of the weekend for me was about to begin . . . Drinking With Everyone at the Hotel!

Mike was heading out to go eat dinner somewhere with Tony Todd, Jeffrey "Re-Animator" Combs, and a few of their friends. I was invited to come along but I wanted to chill by myself for a bit, grab a shower then maybe stop down at the bar. I got a text from John S. to come hang out in his room, there was a promise of Pumpkin Beer . . . My Favorite! We hung there for a while, then made suicidal trip across the highway to Wegmans for some grub. Wegmans has just about every type of food you can think of, but save for Dick we all ended up getting chinese food for some reason.
After eating we headed back to the hotel room and got very lit. We talked about everything from 90s Wrestling Toys and how Chris's son is getting into wrestling now, Jeff was doing his best Last Call with Scott Hall impression, and we had a lengthy conversation about Scarlett Johansson's Naked Ass Pics that leaked online a few days ago. We went down to the bar to see what the scene was like but ending staying in the hallway serenading a Wedding Party with David Bowie songs (This went for like an hour no lie!) We had to go back to the room to get more beer, then we finally made it to the bar. Everyone there seamed to be enjoying them selfs but it was to packed to get in the actual bar area. We were chilling in the lobby section but then got harassed by this hotel manger about drinking outside beers, I must say she did redeem herself when she handed out plastic cups for us to put them . . .
Many pictures we taken, songs were sang, then we headed back up to John's room for a one more beer, then I left to go back to my room. Special Thanks to John and Jen for inviting out with the group, I had a much better time then if I did anything else that night.

Day 3 (September 18, 2011)

Some how I woke up the next day without a hangover, I got out of bed around 9. Mike and I shared some stories from the night before, then got our stuff ready so we could check out and not have to deal with it later.

I went to over to Zach Galligan's table with Brandt. Brandt is a big time Gremlins fans so he got a lot of old Press Kits to get signed and I ended up getting one of those Pop! Movies: Vinyl Figure of Stripe signed.

Sunday turned out to be a very slow crowd day and a lot of vendors ended up breaking down and packing up  early to get home. I did a final lap around the tables and picked up some crazy stuff . . .

Serial Killer/True Crime Comic Books featuring Dahmer, Aileen Wuornos, and David Koresh
A Halloween 3:Season of the Witch novel from the 80s
Some Stands from Knee High Horror (http://www.warfear.net/khh/)
Lisa who had a table next to Mike was selling these fake Parking Permits, for Halloween, Elm Street, Etc.
I also got a Freddy sticker from Lisa for my MoleSkin Notebook . . .

A Silver Shamrock Novelties Magnet from Getyourbuttons.com

After those pickups, I said my goodbyes to John, Jen, Dick, Chris Tanski, Kristy Jett, Dallas, Curt, and Sean VSHPS. The hardest part of these weekends is saying the goodbyes. We all had so much fun together the last few days, but more then likely won't get to all hangout again for a few months or maybe not until next year at the latest.

Mike also decided to call it a day early, so we broke everything down, but before we loaded it into the Van we meet with Tony and he signed this Mirror for me . . .

Mike was meeting some friends for food after the show, but I was pretty beat by the end of that day, so I declined the invite and hit 95 North to get back in my own bed and maybe catch some of the Eagles before falling asleep  . . .

Thanks to everyone who helped make this a very memorial weekend for me, you guys all rock, and I can't wait to do it again. March 9th can't come fast enough . . .
